Shoals Marine Laboratory (SML) is a remote seasonally operated field station located on Appledore Island, Maine (10 miles from our dock in Portsmouth, NH). In operation since 1966, SML is the largest and oldest marine laboratory in the country focused on undergraduate education. The SML mission is to provide outstanding experiential, place-based education and to support innovative research programs focused on understanding and sustaining the marine environment. SML is open for programming from May through September. Our year-round office is located at UNH in Durham, NH.

- Bachelor’s degree in related field and 5+ -years experience, or equivalent.
- Demonstrated project management skills
- Demonstrated ability to manage a budget
- A combination of experience and training including: general construction, carpentry, diesel engines and generators, electrical and plumbing systems, drinking water, seawater and wastewater systems, vehicles, and small motors.
- Ability to lead a team of seasonal and student staff in an isolated residential environment that is physically demanding involving long hours.
- Sufficient strength and physical dexterity to perform duties and responsibilities of this job, including heavy work (up to 75 lbs) with exposure to inclement weather conditions for prolonged periods of time.
- Must be able to wear and use appropriate personal protective equipment as necessary.
- Ability to set-up staging and rigging to safely access difficult locations.
- Willingness to respond to off-hour calls for emergencies.
- Must be willing and able to assist with moving, packing, loading, and unloading of baggage, materials, and supply runs both on Appledore and on the mainland.
- Good communications skills, both oral and written.
- Valid motor vehicle operator’s license
- Required to demonstrate proficiency of knowledge of University policies and procedures surrounding project work.
- Periodic background checks and successful participation in SML’s substance- abuse testing program required.
- Willingness to spend 2-4 nights per week in residence on Appledore Island is expected from April – October.
- Comfort with technology, computer skills, and learning new programs and software

- Must be able to attain a Class I Water Distribution and Class II Water Treatment certifications for drinking water in the State of Maine within 1 year of hire. (SML will support training.)
Additional Preferred Qualifications
- Captain license preferred (USCG 50 Ton Near Coastal or greater)
- AAUS SCUBA Certification
- Project management certification or equivalent
- Wilderness First Aid/Responder certification or willingness to obtain
- Remote field station or marine laboratory experience
- Experience with institutional purchasing and procurement processes.

- Manage functional operations of building infrastructure activity including maintenance and improvement of island and coastal facilities in conjunction with the academic mission of SML.
- Identify, develop and plan maintenance projects to address facility needs.
- Manage and maintain in good standing licensing requirements such as: mooring permits FCC licenses, (Kittery and Sagamore Creek), vehicles, lease of on-shore facilities, and insurances. Perform All Risk insurance updates.
- Serve as the key point of contact for all strategic planning pertaining to SML’s physical facilities; and contribute to the strategic planning for the waterfront and vessels.
- Identify facilities capital needs and advocate for long-term perspectives for SML’s island and mainland facilities and infrastructure.
- Responsible for winter maintenance of SML vehicles and boats (e.g., shoveling) in close collaboration with Director of Operations and Lead Captain
- Responsible for maintenance of SML information technology (IT) infrastructure
- Conduct inspections of facilities during the winter months to assess conditions and/or damages.
- Act as a champion for facilities maintenance issues.
Duty/Responsibility
- Plan and direct open-up and close-up operations and organize spring and fall volunteer weekend facilities activities at Shoals Marine Laboratory’s island facility to ensure a consistent, smooth and effective start and end to each operating season.
- Participate in hiring and training new staff; including island engineers and captains .
- Provide day to day supervision of facilities staff.
- Oversee purchasing functions for the engineering departments. Recommend methods to ensure expenses are monitored against project budgets to measure cost effectiveness and efficiency of purchased services. Purchases include vehicles, fuel, propane, building materials and capital equipment.
- Plan and direct the implementation of safety and related training programs for facilities and engineering team.
- Contribute to emergency planning and safety, health and environmental compliance.
- Assist SML waterfront department to maintain and repair laboratory vessels as needed and to develop strategic plans for vessels.
- Assist in decisions concerning policy setting.
Duty/Responsibility
- Plan, coordinate and execute capital projects including acquiring designs, permits, materials, contractor selection. Work with respective local and state agencies to further capital projects, as well as landowner.
- Develop specifications; prepare proposals and/or project documents.
- Conduct research and execute acquisition of capital equipment.
- Supervise and inspect field conditions and progress of work against project schedule.
- Negotiate contracts and assure adherence to schedules, terms and conditions.
- Consult with CALS/UNH facilities heads or other University clients regarding costs related to design, construction and/or other related costs of projects or other activity.
- Analyze and accept bids on construction/renovation and/or capital projects.
- Oversee purchases of supplies and materials for projects.
- Assist Executive Director to prioritize the capital needs including assisting with budgets for facilities needs for the following season.
- Support the Executive Director’s vision and goals.
- Assist Executive Director in preparation of short and long-term budgets.
- Assist with facilities grant proposals, including implementation of initiatives within funded grants.
Duty/Responsibility
- Provide lectures, talks, and tours of the sustainability infrastructure to classes, public programs, and visitors
- Contribute to classes that involve sustainability, island engineering, and island infrastructure.
- Educate local organizations on sustainability efforts done on Appledore.
- Seek out and attend educational seminars and training meetings as required.
