Duties include teaching lecture and laboratory sections of first- and second-year biotechnology courses. Additional faculty responsibilities include curriculum development and assessment, student advising, , utilizing the latest instructional technology and laboratory equipment, committee work, and service to the department, campus, and college. The opportunity to supervise undergraduate research or honors projects exist.  This position is part of a collective bargaining unit.

The Chemical and Biological Sciences Unit offers Associate’s degrees in Biological Science, Bioinformatics, Environmental Science & Policy, and Chemistry and Biochemistry, with the Biotechnology discipline providing education leading to an Associates of Applied Science in Biotechnology and three certificates: Biotechnology, Biomanufacturing, and Cell and Gene Therapy Technology. Teaching assignments may include various delivery modes, such as face-to-face, online, and blended formats during days and evenings. While Biotechnology labs are currently only at the Germantown campus, Montgomery College has three campuses, the new East County Education Center (ECEC) and instructs courses at area high schools. Faculty may be assigned to any campus, teaching online or HyFlex. Training for online and HyFlex teaching is provided.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Teach lecture and laboratory sections of first- and second-year biotechnology courses in a cGMP training facility, in topics including Introduction to Biotechnology, Cell Culture, Protein Biotechnology, Applied Immunology, Nucleic Acid Methods, Biomanufacturing, and Cell and Gene Therapy.

  • Serve on departmental, campus, college committees, and participatory governance; hold office hours; advise students on academic plans, transfer options, and professional/career opportunities; participate in grant activities; supervise undergraduate research projects; teach Early College and honors classes; and maintain an active personal program of professional development and participation in professional organizations and activities. 
     
  • Professionally interact with local biotechnology industry, government, and academic representatives (University, Community College, Montgomery County Public Schools) and members of our Advisory Committees; design and continuously update curricula that prepares students to enter the biotechnology workforce and for transfer to four-year institutions; Actively engage in student recruitment and retention initiatives.
     
  • Faculty members are assigned a workload consisting of a standard minimum of thirty (30) equivalent semester hours (ESH) per academic year, which may include early morning, evening, weekend, online, or accelerated classes. Although rare, if load is unable to be filled in the primary assigned discipline (Biotechnology), faculty may be required to teach either a biology or chemistry course depending on their educational strength. Opportunities exist to teach summer classes.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree or higher in Biotechnology, Biological Science, Chemistry, or closely related field.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of work experience in an academic and/or industry environment
  • Experience teaching college-level biotechnology for majors using research-based instructional strategies.
  • Evidence of currency in the discipline of biotechnology, including laboratory equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to write and follow SOPs and GLP/GMP regulations
  • Demonstrated effective collaboration with colleagues.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively engage with and facilitate learning for students of diverse backgrounds, cultures, and experiences.
  • Experience integrating technology into course delivery, including the use of a Learning Management System (e.g., Blackboard, Canvas) and/or teaching online or HyFlex courses.
  • Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in a Life Science or Chemistry area or closely related field.
  • Demonstrated ability in biotechnology and its applications.
  • Evidence of pedagogical currency in biotechnology, such as project-based or experiential learning, that incorporates quantitative/computational methods.
  • Experience in curriculum development and advising students on academic plans, transfer options, and professional/career opportunities in the biotechnology industry.
  • Experience writing NSF grant proposals and working on grant-related projects.
  • Experience supervising undergraduate research projects.
  • Experience teaching dual enrollment, Early College, or high school at the college level.
  • Experience teaching online synchronous and fully-distant asynchronous classes.
  • Experience working with faculty, staff, and students in a culturally diverse environment.
  • Experience with SOPs, cGMP, GLP, GDP, and QMS, and basic laboratory methods in cell culture, aseptic technique, and quality control.
  • Experience with scientific equipment such as AKTA FPLCs, PCR, qPCR, Bioanalyzers, plate readers, bioreactors (single use STR and Wave), HPLC, Flow cytometry (MACsQuant 10), TapeStation, Qubit, and DNA/RNA methods.
  • Knowledge of electronic laboratory notebooks.
  • Knowledge of Cell and Gene therapy manufacturing or Biomanufacturing, including regulatory requirements.
  • Experience in the biotechnology industry.

Salary Range: $62,319 – $93,020, annually.
