Job Description

 

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic and social unrest that the nation and our college community has experienced, the College Social Worker exists to provide a range of professional social services to Hennepin Technical College (HTC) students. These can include both direct and indirect services to students. Indirect services include coordinating culturally responsive partnerships with external services providers to support students’ needs as identified in annual student needs assessments across campus. Indirect social work may also include providing expertise to college faculty and departments to create trauma informed teaching, programs and service delivery throughout campus. This position will work closely with law enforcement faculty, staff and students to ensure training and development around responding to community where social services needs have been identified. The goal of this position is to assist students in overcoming specific barriers through programmatic efforts and referral to supportive services within the college community and the larger community in which the campus resides. This position coordinates activities and resources in the Hunger Free Task Force and Campus Assessment Referral and Education Teams. Direct services may include engaging students either individually or in groups, to assess barriers to participating fully in their education.

Specific Job Duties include:

 

  • Provide case work services to HTC students experiencing difficulties in accessing education, and coordinate activities and resources.

  • Collaborate with law enforcement faculty, staff and students to ensure training and development
    around responding to community where social services needs have been identified

  • Develops and maintains professional relationships with community agencies to address student barriers to accessing college education and services and stay abreast of student populations and their needs.

  • Coordination basic needs initiatives including the Hunger Free Campus Initiative, Campus Assessment Referral and Education (CARE) Teams, and Child Care resources.

  • Promotes student social well-being through a variety of resources, handouts, web presence, and workshops.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Social Work Licensure with the Minnesota Board of Social Work (LSW)

  • Knowledge of intervention techniques sufficient to meet the needs of diverse student populations.

  • Knowledge of client data privacy guidelines.

  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws and regulations affecting social work practice.

  • Ability to establish good working relationships with students, their families, college and social service personnel, public officials and private citizens.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, written and oral.

  • Ability to prepare complete social histories and case plans, and reports

 

Preferred Qualification 

  • Three or more years working as a Social Worker or Human Services worker with adult populations

  • Experience with creating or furthering new and/ or existing programs

  • Working knowledge of FERPA and data privacy laws in higher education

  • Skill in utilizing a variety of computer applications software systems for data collection and recall

  • Experience in Law Enforcement and/or Community Policing

 

Other Requirements

 

The College Social Worker must have a working knowledge of all college policies and procedures in order to troubleshoot problems on behalf of the students, faculty or staff. As state and federal regulations and reporting requirements change, the College Social Worker must initiate the development of new procedures and recommend these to the Dean of Student Development. The College Social Worker must also be able to solve unique problems that are acceptable to students, faculty and administration. Daily problem-solving involves prioritizing the many and varied demands, defining, analyzing and resolving the problems brought to this position and making decisions which have an overall impact on student success and well-being.
