Job Description
The purpose of this position is to help students develop skills, behaviors and habits that contribute to success in college. The position will use non-cognitive assessments to determine appropriate support resources for under-served students; meet with under-served students to establish student success plans and monitor academic progress; ensure students are registered for courses in the subsequent semester; and continually assess the effectiveness of retention initiatives. This is accomplished by analyzing results of non-cognitive motivational assessments to determine appropriate outreach to students; collaborating with the Information and Technology Services Department (ITS) to establish and maintain the online academic progress reporting tool; meeting with students and creating individualized success plans; monitoring students to ensure appropriate course placement and education and/or career goals; and collaborating with faculty to follow-up on academic progress of assigned students. Other duties include serving on campus committees and participating in affinity groups.

This is an exempt, professional staff position and includes a comprehensive benefits package offering medical, dental and vision coverage; generous paid time off; tuition assistance; and retirement savings. This position will require work performed regularly on campus.

Employees of Harford Community College, including instructors for online and virtual courses, must be residents of Maryland or the contiguous states of Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia or the District of Columbia; non-residents are expected to relocate to meet this requirement.

Required Education

Required Experience
Three years of experience in higher education advising, student engagement, and retention

Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Provides proactive outreach, academic coaching, and intrusive academic support by creating and monitoring individual success plans
  • Collaborates with ITS to establish and a grade progress reporting system in the online portal
  • Analyzes results of periodic academic progress reports and follows up with students and faculty
  • Refers students to relevant College resource as needed
  • Assists student with study skills strategies
  • Provides campus-wide engagement to ensure appropriate course placement for students and establishes education and career goals
  • Assigns and reviews results of non-cognitive motivational assessments to determine appropriate support services for identified underserved students
  • Enters student appointment information in the student information system
  • Establishes various forms of communication to recruit students and ensure participation in meetings and events
  • Tracks student attendance at required programs
  • Assesses program effectiveness by assisting with compiling statistics regarding success and retention for students receiving success coaching vs. the general student population
  • Assists with identifying students to target and recruit programs
  • Maintains appointment notes in the student information system
  • Tracks academic progress of students receiving academic success coaching
  • Collaborates with faculty and staff to ensure holistic cross-campus support for students in transitional courses by reporting program outcome to campus constituencies
  • Collaborates with faculty and staff to develop and offer programming and resources that intentionally connect academic work and skill development to the exploration of career pathways

 


Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in higher education, psychology, counseling, student development, or a related field required.
  • Professional experience working with college students in academic advising, academic support programs, or other related fields.
  • Ability to deliver student support programming on issues of time management, study skills, and strategies for success.
  • Ability to work with a diverse student population.

Hours per Week
40 - 100%

General Weekly Work Schedule
Monday -Friday 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. some nights and weekends may be required.
