Clackamas Community College (CCC) seeks to hire a Science Lab Technician [Full-Time], classified staff, union position. PURPOSE OF POSITION

:

Perform a variety of integral tasks that establish, maintain, and promote a learning environment in a science laboratory setting using safe lab procedures with efficiency and integrity. Prepare and set up labs/lab equipment and perform various necessary clean up duties following completion of learning experience.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

:
  • Prepare Science Labs (50%)
    • Support chemistry, biology, environmental science, microbiology, water/environmental technology, anatomy and physiology, zoology, and general science laboratory classes at both Oregon City campus as well as Harmony campus as needed.
    • Perform a variety of duties to support learning objectives requiring specialized scientific knowledge to include set up of laboratory equipment/exercises and maintenance of equipment
    • Prepare appropriate primers, buffers, electrophoresis gels, DNA ladders, etc. for DNA extraction, PCR, and gel electrophoresis for a variety of bacteriological, human, plant or animal specimens, ensuring all necessary equipment and supplies are available to meet both student and faculty needs and troubleshoot process errors as needed to maximize student learning experience.
    • Collect samples from local areas such as ponds, wetlands or forests as needed to provide live or fresh specimens.
    • Aseptically transfer, culture, and maintain (on schedule) pure cultures of live microorganisms, which includes the preparation of the appropriate type of media to ensure strong growth for microbiological studies.
    • Coordinate the availability of lab materials with lab needs and expedite the distribution to a variety of assigned lab rooms at appropriate times, often on short deadlines.
    • Assist instructors in the development and implementation of new/additional laboratory experiments.
  • Clean and Maintain Laboratories, Equipment, and Supplies (25%)
    • Clean and disinfect laboratories, stock with proper supplies, initiate work orders for building maintenance and information technology problems.
    • Wash and sterilize lab glassware, slides, etc.
    • Maintain and calibrate scientific equipment such as pH meters, incubators, water baths, digital balances, autoclaves, PCR machines, Vernier equipment, etc.
    • Troubleshoot issues with equipment and repair if necessary/possible.
    • Troubleshoot new and existing lab protocol as needed to maximize learning experience for current and future students.
    • Provide animal care to caged and aquatic living specimens.
  • Laboratory Safety, Hazardous Waste and Biohazard Management (10%)
    • Properly collect, label, and store hazardous waste materials in accordance with Safety Data Sheets (SDS) until waste collection is performed.
    • Sterilize and dispose of potentially pathogenic microorganisms.
    • Sterilize and dispose of animal and human biohazard materials (i.e., blood, urine, saliva).
    • Perform regular inspections of safety equipment including eyewashes, safety showers, spill kits, fire extinguishers.
    • Maintain working knowledge of Clackamas Community College chemical hygiene plan, OSHA regulations to properly address chemical spills, accidents, and other potential safety issues.
  • Maintain Inventory (10%)
    • Assess quarterly the future lab materials (biological specimens, microbiological cultures, chemical agents and other expendable supplies) and equipment listed for each lab section, create and inventory based on future usage of items by all lab sections to ensure overlapping needs are met and items are ordered in an appropriate time frame, and ensure adequate supply, availability and functionality of supplies and equipment prior to use.
    • Work routinely with Lab Coordinator to make sure supplies are ordered in a timely manner.
    • Maintain location of laboratory equipment for general use, security purposes, and the assessment of future needs.
    • Coordinate replacement of broken or out-of-date equipment with the Lab Coordinator.
    • Maintain and organize list of chemicals, media, primers on hand with associated product information sheets and/or SDSs.
  • Student Assistance (5%)
    • Assist students effectively with individual project implementation as identified by the student or faculty.
    • Provide guidance with lab safety and standard protocol.
    • Prepare, obtain and/or provide project materials as needed.
    • Provide directions on lab procedures such as use of technology, microbiological media preparation, fish or invertebrate care as needed.

GENERAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, other agencies, and the general public.
  • Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the classification.
  • Participate in college committees when requested.
  • Maintain proficiency by attending training and meetings, reading materials, and meeting with others in areas of responsibility, which may require travel.
  • Maintain work areas in a clean and orderly manner. Maintain student confidentiality, data integrity, and comply with all related college, state, and federal standards, including the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).


Qualifications




REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

:
  • Equivalent to one year of college level Biology;
  • One year of college level Chemistry AND microbiology;
  • One year of laboratory experience; Or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the duties as described.

  • Thorough knowledge of principles and practices of scientific laboratory areas.


  • Proficiency in utilizing various computer programs (Word, Excel, etc.), and search engines (for research purposes).

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS OR LICENSES

:
  • Driver's license valid in the State of Oregon.

The position requires regular (60-80%) ability to use dexterity and fine motor skills assemble, build or repair machines or other objects.
