Job Summary

Facilitate the academic, social, and cultural enrichment of high school students by being a mentor and role model. Supervise participants primarily in the non-academic segments of the Upward Bound summer program. This position is 24-hour residential from June 15 thru July 3. During that time, this position requires living in a college dorm, located in Des Moines, from Sunday evenings through Friday afternoons. This position will assist with an out-of-state trip the week of July 14.

Essential Functions

1. Live with students in college dormitory during the residential component of the summer program
2. Tutor students individually and in group setting in core academic subjects of English, Math, and Science.
3. Assist students with the development of study skills.
4. Mentor students in the areas of academic and college preparation.
5. Establish and maintain positive, respectful mentoring relationships with student participants and staff.
6. Conduct weekly meetings with other tutor counselors to implement activities, address and promote communication.
7. Monitor adherence to and enforce policies and procedures with particular attention to rules governing student conduct.
8. Mentor students by participating in educational/cultural activities
9. Maintain confidentiality
10. Drive students to and from off-campus activities
11. Other duties as assigned
 

Required Qualifications
Must have a minimum of one-year postsecondary experience with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Must have experience tutoring or mentoring high school age students. Must demonstrate the potential for leadership. Must have a valid Iowa Driver’s license and be qualified to drive DMACC vehicles. Must certify as a mandatory reporter.
